Gort < back

Gort, 24 kms from Corofin is surrounded by ancient monastic ruins and peaceful countryside. Apart from the town itself there are many other reasons for visiting Gort.

A short distance from the town stands the beautiful round tower of Kilmacduagh. Beside it are the ruins of the monastery founded in the early seventh centuty by St. Colman Mac Duach. The round tower was a place of refuge for the monks at times of attack.

Coole Park
Just north of the town you will find Coole Park, once home of Lady Gregory, who played a central role in the literary revival in Ireland and co-founded the Abbey Theatre. Coole is a wonderful place for walking and it also has an interpretative centre and coffee shop.

The famous Autograph Tree can be found in the walled garden and is so named because it has been autographed by the many famous literary guests, including W.B.Yeats, who visited Lady Gregory at Coole. Why not walk by the lake immortalised by W.B.Yeats in his poem 'The Wild Swans at Coole'!
