Inchiquin Lake in the Burren

The Burren The Burren is internationally famous because of its beautiful limestone landscapes and the remarkable flora as well as its rich archaeological heritage. It is the finest example of a karstic terrain in Ireland, with a full assemblage of the curious landforms and subterranean drainage systems that characterise these limestone terrains. The area also hosts 70 wedge-tombs (the most famous of them being Poulnabrone Dolmen, 20 mins. from Kilfenora), ring forts, caves (most notable Aillwee & Doolin Cave), castles (Leamenagh Castle - just 5 mins. from Kilfenora) and a network of field walls and hut circles.
Mullaghmore Burren National Park
The Burren Display centre in Kilfenora provides an insight into the mysteries of the region and should be your first stop before starting your exploration of the Burren. The best way to explore the region is by walking on the old 'green roads' - which you find all over the area - and by cycling on the small side roads. The Burren offers many marked loop walks and loop cycle tracks. The best walk to start with is up and around Mullaghmore Mountain, 20 mins. from Kilfenora.

Day trips & visits:

The Aran Islands
  • Aran Islands & the Cliffs of Moher - Doolin harbour is the starting point for the ferry to the Aran Islands, a day trip which shouldn't be missed. A few minutes south of Doolin are the mighty Cliffs of Moher, Ireland's most famous landmark. The Cliffs can also be explored by boat from Doolin, or by foot on an exciting new walk along the cliff edge - saving you the parking fees at the visitor centre!

  • Dysert O'Dea Castle and Archaeology Centre, Corofin - The castle, the old church, a high cross, roundforts and a famous battlefield can all be explored on the worthwile Archeological trail.
